Izuru Mizutani Exhibition「in the shadow」

Approx. 10 min. visual art work, “in the shadow” viewers consign their own shadow to the screen. When the viewers stand in front of the projector and cast their shadow on the screen, sub projector which is placed with angle projects another images. When I stood in front of the screen to see the main image, I got disturbed by the sub projector images. However, as time passes, and by the time when the main screen shows familiar scenes of Nagoya city, I finally could get adjust myself in the vague borders (what’s more, I accept my own shadow as “myself”)., then I walk in image of the white urban clutter. Later, when another shadow approaches me in the image, I got tensed for the person who only exist on the screen. As I was watching the image, I devoted myself that much.
In Mizutani’s work, there are always some elements of isolation and regaining of relationship with others clearly. The important thing is the elements and theme elaborate from image to story then viewers’ sensory. Viewers shadow becomes a media to reflect the actual space. Through the shadow, viewers’ bodies translate the space to the screen. The process of change itself is Mizuani’s intention.
At the end of the video, there is a scene of candle lights. I interpreted the light as the light of salvation. But at the same time, it seemed the “shadow” on the screen was casting me. Reversal, Exchange and Two Pieces in One. “in the shadow “ is about a tale of individuality and relationship of social structure. It can be a variation of Narcissus myth. Through Mizutani’s work, I could see how subject has been presented.
