ARTIST STATEMENT

the world of "Ko-No-Ho-Shi"
"Ko-No-Ho-Shi" which means "this star" in Japanese is the latest series of works I've focused on for the last couple of years. "This star" might be our planet in a distant future or some other world far away in the galaxy. Or it just could be the fragments of someone's lost memory which has never been recalled anymore... Anyway, it seems there are an old man, a little girl and a tiny companion on "this star". Hakase, that is the old man's name, is an engineer and the other two were created by him; the mysterious android girl and the small robot; Chibi(chibie). The little girl, however, needs an important element for the completion. To save her life, they  set out on an one-way journey to obtain the element. And their destiny with full of hardship and discovery just began to roll on when I started drawing the first image of them...

the style
On this series, I returned to my favorite "ink on paper" style from painting on canvas, but I stepped forward technically this time. My new "mix media" style, mixing super detailed ink drawings with Sumi ink brush strokes and gouache paintings, brought some unique and colorful drive to the world of "Ko-No-Ho-Shi". The beauty of this style is also that no correction allowed. Even when putting a draw line wrong, it can not be concealed. Done is done. I believe, however, this one shot deal gives an energy to this series, although I need a serious concentration during the work time.

ARTIST BIO
Chiézo was born in Tokyo, Japan and grown under the strong influences of the city's multi-cultural background which old traditions and new trends chaotically mixed up. She was also drawn to the art at very early in her school days thanks to her mother who was an artist, but unfortunately her unique and original way of expressions didn't fit into Japanese conventional education system. That might be one of the reasons her serious start of art study was late, but she believes that it was rather lucky to have been free from so-called art education because she still maintains her purity even now.
After the graduate of a college (not art one), she began to work for a big company in Tokyo but soon to realize it was a wrong decision. She entered a famous private art school at age 25 and learned basic drawing skills there. Chiézo's career as a professional illustrator began around age 27 and her works has been appeared on the major publications in Japan since then. Although she has been awarded in some illustration or poster competitions, she has never tried to have her own exhibition even in her country. When she became a part-time resident in Florida 2007, she switched her focus to the creation of her own art world, not for magazines and advertisements. Her creating style to mix multi drawing and painting techniques from both Japanese traditional art and the western's reflects her life as an artist.
